Tessa Sinclair – Human – Hunter

Age: 29

Appearance: Blue eyes. Wavy light brown hair. Athletic body. 5’6”. Her everyday style is casual – jeans, cargo pants (someone has to wear them), t-shirts, Doc Martens, athleisure – but she can glam up in a skimpy cocktail dress.

Background: Tessa comes from Detroit (a place she left as soon as she could). Her family is a delightful mix of distant and toxic – and by the time of the novel, mostly out of the picture. This environment left her seeking a found family. She tried it in the Army, but an affair with Tyler Caplan – her unit commander – put a disastrous end to that. Returning to Detroit, she slipped into a self-destructive routine of random hookups and binge drinking. Now that she’s a member of the Curia, she has a new mission – and, she hopes, a new family. In spite of her desire for a family, she tends to keep people at a distance, with surface level friendships that fade over time. 

Tessa can be impulsive, particularly when it involves friends and lovers. Speaking of lovers, she has a thing for sex in interesting locations and with people that some would say are off-limits – superiors like Tyler – and demons.

When she’s not killing demons, Tessa likes to listen to 90’s rock, have a glass (or three) of Jack Daniels and flirt with whatever guy is in close proximity.

Desange Leroux – Human – Hunter

Age: 24.

Appearance: Chiseled features. Lean. Short black hair with beard stubble. 5’11”. 

Background: Desange is a hunter recruited from France out of graduate school for business. He is assigned to be Tessa’s mentor at the Curia’s Academy for demon hunting. He comes from an upper-middle class Parisian family of overachievers and is close with his parents, sister and brother. He grew up Catholic, but as an adult  is more culturally Catholic than an active practitioner. His family believes he does private security work and is not read into his work as a demon hunter. He has had two serious girlfriends, both 2-3 year relationships. His last relationship ended amicably before he started graduate school and was recruited. After a slip up in Paris where Tessa and Desange share a kiss, they agree to be platonic friends; however, there is still some sexual tension between them. He is an extrovert with workaholic tendencies that manifest as a hyperfocus on hunting in his assigned African cell. He believes in the Curia’s mission and wants to make the world a safer, better place. He holds himself to high standards and is good at compartmentalizing his life as a hunter.

Kim Min-Seo – Human – Hunter

Age: 22

Appearance: Petite, slender build. Black hair, usually worn long, except when she parties — then it’s pigtails all the way. Brown eyes. 5’3”.

Background: Min is a hunter recruited from South Korea. Tessa is assigned to be her mentor at the Enochian Curia’s Academy for demon hunting. Min grew up in Seoul in a Presbyterian orphanage, where she was left as a baby. After years of searching for her birth parents, she gave up on the quest because she found a greater search for truth with the Curia.  She asks tons of questions, to the point of annoyance at times. Her nickname growing up was “Detective Min.”  Min doesn’t believe in God, and has a working theory about demons and angels being aliens. A history and science geek, she studied physics in college. She enjoys going out dancing and can equally lose herself for hours in the library doing heavy research. She is not naturally athletic, so relies on her intelligence to hunt down demons more than her physical strength. Min is bisexual and had a girlfriend in university that she broke up with to join the Curia. She has also dated a fellow male recruit. Min’s ultimate goal is to discover the hidden truth behind angels and demons.

Ruth – Angel

Age: Around 2000 years old. Does not look her age — thankfully.

Appearance: Athletic, tall and lean. Short blonde hair. Blue eyes. 5’10”.

Background: Ruth is an angel and the founder of the Enochian Curia, a secret order of demon hunters. She arrived on Earth in the 3rd century and after battling demons on her own, started recruiting humans who could use demonic glass and daggers to detect and kill demons through her ability to see the indigo aura, a unique, rare aura that only hunters possess. She has a commanding presence that inspires awe and fear. She can come across as cold, despite her angelic healing touch that can heal human injuries in seconds. She reinforces a sense of purpose and discipline for Tessa when she doubts her calling as a hunter. She also saved Tessa’s life from a drug overdose. For Ruth, the mission to rid the planet of demons always comes first.

Tyler Caplan – Human

Age: 33.

Appearance: Lean body. Muscular but not huge. Dirty blonde hair. Brown eyes. 6’0”. 

Background: Tyler grew up in Connecticut and is from a wealthy, old railroad money family. A trust fund baby, he enlisted in the Army to rebel from his family’s legacy of “Yale and join the family business.” He obtained his degree in history online and became an Intelligence officer, befriending one of his soldiers, Tessa, an enlisted intel analyst. Their friendship turned into an affair, leading to both of them getting kicked out of the Army due to fraternization. There are still lingering feelings between Tessa and Tyler, and he is Tessa’s primary connection to the “normal world” outside of demon hunting. Tyler is allowed to have access to his trust, but has to comply with his family’s wishes for him to support their philanthropy. He runs the Caplan Cancer Foundation and lives in New York City. He has a distant, strained relationship with his family, including his parents, brother and twin sisters. He developed PTSD after multiple deployments and doesn’t sleep well. He is introverted and intelligent. He enjoys reading about history and likes to collect antiques from the Victorian era/19th century America.

Dylan Alanis – Demon

Age: Around 75 years old, but looks to be in his early 30s.

Appearance: Dark hair. Green eyes. Olive skin. Toned body. 6’1” with a sparrow tattoo on his right bicep. He likes to wear vintage band t-shirts and an old leather jacket from 1958 that Marlon Brando gave him. Swarthy.

Background: Dylan is a lust demon who has been on earth since 1947, although he looks to be in his early 30s. He is a chameleon drifter that has gained power as a member of a newer demonic faction, the Reformists. He targets individuals to tempt versus masses and uses music as a way to connect quickly with his victims. While he can appreciate all music, he particularly likes classic rock and older blues. He is not a fan of modern pop music but will act like he enjoys it if that helps him gain control over his mark. He operates primarily in the US around the music and entertainment industry, but occasionally enjoys traveling to Europe. A confident extrovert, it is easy for Dylan to connect with others and establish rapport quickly. As a lust demon, he is a master at his craft and has an “anything goes” mentality in the bedroom.
